last week, jesse and i went to the northwest to visit our friends. they actually live in victoria, bc. yes, thats right, CANADA! we had never been there before and were very excited about going.
we flew into seattle and ben and amy met us there and drove us back to their home. we drove about 2 hours to the canadian border. i made them stop and get out so that i could get a stamp in my passport. i know, i know, it sounds dorky, but it was my first stamp. i forgot to get one in july when we went to mexico.
we had to take a ferry boat over to victoria. it’s amazing how many cars can fit into one of those things.
while we were in victoria, we stayed with ben, amy and linus. they were very gracious hosts, especially linus!
we ate like kings and queens all at the hands of amy. she is a terrific cook! i even got some of her recipes to take home. we took linus to the beach one day to run around. it was FREEZING out, but he didnt seem to mind. he dove right in the water to play fetch.
we also went shopping, rented movies, walked around downtown, and had the most amazing hot chocolate ever! it is made with chocolate shavings instead of syrup or powder. it was like biting into a chocolate bar. i can still taste it now!
we also got to spend some time with the watson seniors (ben’s parents). i always like seeing them, they are the sweetest people and i love looking at all of richard’s artwork. in case my “many readers” dont know who ben watson or richard watson are you should check out their respective websites. they both are in the children’s book industry. richard is an amazing author/illustrator and ben is also a wonderful author. we actually got to see some of his next masterpiece.
we had a great time with friends. thank you watson families for the great hospitality and all the lively discussions and debates. ;) we cant wait to go back…just as long we dont take any more of the small ferry boats. my stomach cant take it!
the parliament building in victoria. it’s where they make all the laws pertaining to their territory.
the empress hotel.
the most amazing hot chocolate ever!

What an incredible visit we had with you two wonderful friends. Amy was so impressed and told me again and again and AGAIN... Geesh. You have such huge hearts and are incredibly kind, not to mention supportive. Thank you for your wonderful friendship, no matter how much time or distance come between, is still as wonderful as ever.
Thanks for putting up with me and my verbal barrage. Being a self-professed hermit and spending way too much time mining my own brain in my writer cave, I fear when I start talking to old friends like you words gush out much too quickly for editing. I also get excited to talk to you both about stuff swimming around in my head for years since I last saw you (not including November). Bouncing questions and ideas off of people who I deeply respect help me try to answer my own questions, silly as they often are. I miss the times where we'd talk about all kinds of stuff. I truly believe, especially in college and afterwards, that those talks and both of your friendships (and Logan and co) certainly influenced me in a profound way. They probably affected me much more than all my classes together.
We both deeply admire and respect your faith, humanity, and brains. And thanks for making me laugh so hard the back of my brain hurts. And of course your hearts. Thank you so much for sacrificing New Years with your own family to spend with us. We loved it and both of you. Miss you. Hi to the fam. Oh, and you're so generous it's almost stupid. You give me WAY too much credit there while you both put me to shame. Thank you.
