what's that smell?

this morning after jesse left for work, i thought i smelled gas coming from the garage. it wasnt really strong, but it still smelled like gas.

when albert (my brother in law) came to drop off the kids he walked into the garage and smelled it too. he said it smelled like gas, but that it could also be a dead animal rotting somewhere. we checked the trash cans and listened for any leaks from the water heater, but nothing.

the day went on like planned and when we left the house to run errands, i thought that when i come back if i can really smell it in the garage then i will call the gas company. well, when we got back i still smelled it, but it wasnt as strong as it should be if it actually were gas. so i kind of ignored it the rest of the day.

later when i walked into the garage for something, i smelled it in the laundry room (which is connected to the garage). then i thought it was our dryer. just then, jesse comes home from work and i tell him everything that had happened. he checked the dryer, but no overwhelming smell there either. we decided it was definitely from the garage.

after dinner, we were taking the kids and charlie to the park. on the ride there, i called the gas company to report a gas leak just to be sure. well, they were sending someone right away. jesse stayed at the park with the kids and charlie and i drove back to the house to wait for the gas guy. he came pretty fast. i told him everything that had happened that day and as soon as he broke the threshold for the garage he says:

"oh, you have a something dead in here"

great!!

he did say that he would test the lines of the house just to be sure. everything was tight and sealed. no leaks anywhere. its almost good news and bad news. good news that there is no gas leak, but bad news that we have a dead animal SOMEWHERE in our garage rotting. i almost wished there was a gas leak so that it could be found and fixed immediately. that didnt happen. i was convinced it was a gas leak and said, "but it smells like gas doesnt it?" he said, "yeah, it is gas, but just a different kind of gas." the guy was really nice and looked around with his flashlight and mirror checking our freezer and water heater. no luck.

its either in the walls or in some box that is in the back of the garage. the guy did say that since its summer that if it is in the wall, it will rot faster than if it were winter. he said about 2 weeks of rotting flesh smell. we will be cleaning out the garage soon hopefully to find the animal (probably mice).

honestly though, we dont want to find this gross thing, so i think we should just leave it where ever it is and let nature run its course. is that gross?

i think leaving it where it is, is the lesser of two evils.

i dont know. i might be changing my tune when the smell starts to permeate the house and just be way too much to handle. i will keep you posted.

Reminds me of the time we ended up finding hair and bones of a skunk in our garage. We had a bunch of palates on the floor and I guess it got stuck. It was lovely.
