a turkey post

one of my favorite and most money saving things I like to do is to buy an extra turkey at thanksgiving time and freeze it. because I buy it at thanksgiving it is on sale and I get a great bargain. I paid $5.02 for a 13.5 lb turkey. what a great deal!!

a couple of months later I thaw it out and bake it. it is amazing how much meat I get out of it and how many dinners I can stretch from a turkey too!

yesterday I roasted my turkey. for dinner we had turkey, mashed potatoes and green beans. after we ate, I pulled all the rest of the meat from the turkey bones and was left with 4 ziploc sandwich bags full of mixed turkey meat (dark and white).

I have big plans for those bags. I am planning to make sesame noodles with turkey tonight and the other nights, white bean and turkey chilli, turkey tortilla soup, and either turkey quesadillas or turkey tortilla chip casserole.

I am excited to see how far this meat will take me and how much money I would have saved if I had to make different dinners for these nights. it’s like a challenge. I know, I know. nerd alert.

as I post the meals, I will also post recipes for those who are interested in them.

I typically ALWAYS, ALWAYS roast my turkeys in a bag. these bags. this day, I didn’t have any on hand, so I was forced to look up a good recipe to roast a turkey the old fashioned way. it was the pionner woman’s recipe, but without the brining before hand. I just added herbs, salt and pepper before I covered it with foil and then followed the recipe from there. it was so good.

next thanksgiving, you should try this money saving tip.
