last week, jj's principal called us and told us jj was selected by his kindergarten teacher to go to a new K-1 combo class. He was wondering if we were interested in putting him in it. we jumped at the chance. well, lets say, i did. i figured it was a good thing, which it is, but really didnt think about any cons of the situation until later. we learned his new teacher, mrs. kidd is a first year teacher, but comes highly recommended. we were worried because of his age and behavior issues. the principal reassured us that he would do fine. jj was really excited to go. he had two other classmates going too. so we decided to go for it and see how he does. i met her last friday and she seems really sweet and excited to start teaching.
so, today was his second "first day of school". he still plays with the other kindergarteners at dropoff and recess. pick up is still the same too. he was really excited to be walked to his new class. his class is seperate from the kindergarten area and he has his own desk. all us moms were a little nervous to see how our kiddos would do in a different class. when i picked him up, he seemed much more calm, then what he normally is. it appeared the class is more structured than what he is used to. which is awesome for him. he needs all the structure he can get. overall, he had a good day. i think he will do well in her class. i think it will challenge him more. while we were walking back to the car, our conversation went like this:
me: how was your day?
jj: good
me: did you like your new class?
jj: yes
me: did you make new friends?
jj: yes, i made a best friend.
me: what is his name?
jj: i dont remember.
me: well, do you like your new teacher?
jj: yes
me: do you like your old or new class better?
jj: i like my old class more
me: why?
jj: because there are cubbies
